Saggy Suspension My wife pulls our 39′ Fifth Wheel with our 1986 Ford F-150. The suspension seems a bit saggy and the trailer wanders. Suggestions? Oblivious in Outlook

Gee, can’t imagine why you’re having handling troubles!? In reality, pulling a trailer requires the proper equipment, concentration and practice especially if you have not had experience. For example, passing a semi-trailer unit can give you momentary handling problems. Over-steering to correct the initial sway can aggravate the situation until it becomes severe. Over braking will also exaggerate the sway, leading to a possible jack-knife. Keep the presence of mind to apply your trailer brakes using the dash mounted hand control first, thereby reducing and eliminating trailer sway. If you find trailer sway is frequent or constant there is a good chance that you have a load problem and are probably light at your hitch and heavy on the tail end. Check tire pressure and hitch weight at the pin and make necessary adjustments to ensure a safe trip. Please call and let me know where you are going – I will try to go the opposite direction.
